The continued education, improvement and expansion of healthcare to the people of the Greater Matamba Area.
Since 2009 we have coordinated our efforts with that of the Matamba Mission of the Netherlands, the major partner in this project. This mission is located in Amsterdam and preceded our establishment of the St. Joseph Mission. We also coordinate our efforts with a Lutheran Group from Annandale, Minnesota which lends its major support to the local elementary school and other needs of the people in the area. In 2013 our mission teamed with the Lutherans in providing a cargo container of both medical and educational supplies to the Healthcare Center and school.
Our mission’s focus is two-fold: To insure that the donations are not diverted in any way, much needed medical equipment will be purchased directly by our organization. The second need that will be addressed is that of sending regular missions to the Healthcare Center so as to assist the medical staff in the continuous health care services by the Center’s personnel.
Since Fr. Mligo’s first visit in to our area in 2007, the area has received its first electrical power (due to the creation of the Kitulo National Park near Matamba) and in 2013 water service. The hospital now has a large water tower/storage tank, back-up generator for its electrical service, ultrasound machine, dormitory for visiting families along with a cafeteria, housing for nurses and doctors. On our mission’s first visit to the Center in 2009, the hospital had basic metal hospital beds with no mattresses, sheets, blankets or pillows. Beds are now fully addressed in these areas including the addition of mosquito netting. There is still no laundry facilities and, as with the patients’ meals, the family must provide this service.
